How to play Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee gives you seven letters set in a honeycomb, with one special letter in the middle. Your job is to build as many words as you can — but there are two simple rules that shape every guess.

  1. Use four letters or more. Three-letter words and shorter do not count.
  2. Always use the centre letter. Every valid word must contain the highlighted middle letter. The outer six are optional, and any letter may be reused.
  3. Score points and rank up. Longer words score more, and your rank rises from Beginner toward Genius as your total climbs.
  4. Find the pangram. At least one word uses all seven letters — spot it for a juicy bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Spelling Bee?

You are given seven letters arranged in a honeycomb. Make as many words as you can, each at least four letters long, and every word must include the centre letter. Letters can be used more than once in a single word.

What is a pangram?

A pangram is a word that uses all seven letters at least once. Every puzzle has at least one. Finding a pangram feels great and earns a seven-point bonus on top of the word's normal score.

How does scoring work?

Four-letter words score one point. Longer words score one point per letter, so a six-letter word is worth six. Pangrams earn their length plus a seven-point bonus. Your rank climbs from Beginner all the way up to Genius as your score grows.

Which words are accepted?

Common English words of four or more letters that use only the seven letters shown and include the centre letter. Very obscure words, hyphenated words and proper nouns are not part of the answer list.

Do I have to reach Genius?

Not at all. Genius is set at a high share of the total points so it is a real achievement, but every word you find moves you up the ranks. Play as long as you like, then load a new puzzle.

Is this the New York Times Spelling Bee?

No. This is our own original version with independently generated puzzles. It plays by the same seven-letter, centre-letter idea but is not affiliated with anyone, and there is no daily limit.
